2014 Used Book and Curriculum Sale! Tuesday July 15th

Just a reminder of our sale from 9:30 to 12:30 tomorrow, July 15, at Christ Chapel (1200 Old Stage Road, Centerville) - I think we're going to have a good selection!

You can drop books and materials off the evening before (Monday, July 14) from 6:30 to 8:30, or the morning of the 15th from 9 to 9:30. Pick-up is from 12:30 to 1:30 after the sale. (If you have lots to sell, please try to drop off the night before so you have enough time to put your items on tables of the right category.)

Minimum label requirements: There must be two matching labels taped securely to the item that state its price and your name (so we can get the money to you at the end!). If you’re really short on time – and who isn’t, nowadays? – just do the following:

1. Labels are here. Labels
2. Print a bunch of copies of the page and cut ‘em up.
3. Mark your price on each pair of labels, and tape ‘em on – preferably with one of the copies on the inside cover of the item.

(Remember, two labels on each!)

If you want to fill out the rest of the label information for your items, that’s certainly fine, too. (This also gives you a record of which items sold and for how much, and is a safeguard in case one or both of your labels fall off.)

When you bring your books, please pay a $2 seller fee (donation to Christ Chapel) and label an envelope (available there) with your last and first name, phone number, and email address.

Anything you don't think is worth time to label can be put on the "buck a bag" table. Proceeds from this will ensure a decent location donation, and then any extra will be divided evenly among those running the sale, to compensate them a little for their time.

I will make up a sheet describing how to get to Dunkin', a park, a cool penny candy store, library, etc. for anyone who needs to entertain their kids between dropping books off in the morning and picking them up after the sale.

Please also focus on any manipulatives, educational games, etc. that you'd like to sell: I'm planning to advertise the sale on Craigslist as an "educational materials sale" to try to get buyers among teachers and daycare folk: they've often been the ones who've bought the most when I've sold homeschool items at yard sales.

Tutorials

TEACH Tutorials offers weekly Wednesday afternoon classes for homeschooled middle and high school students on Cape Cod.  Currently, we’re in the process of planning our 2014-15 school year and would love to expand our roster of class offerings.  To that end, we’re seeking qualified individuals to serve as tutors in a variety of academic subjects, including the following:

v  Middle or high school science (Apologia curriculum preferred)
v  Middle or high school literature (IEW curriculum preferred)
v  Middle or high school level history/geography
v  High school writing (IEW curriculum preferred)
v  High school level American government/civics (perhaps including a week of
TeenPact at the State House next May?)
v  Art (either combined or separate classes for middle/high school)

We’re open to proposals for other classes, although we do focus primarily on those that are academic rather than extra-curricular.  We would also be willing to consider curriculums other than the ones suggested.

Our goal is to find tutors with expertise and enthusiasm for a particular subject acquired through formal education and/or experience.  A heart for young people and a desire to see them succeed in their education would be helpful as well!

If you are interested in learning more details, please contact Lauren Muller at lauren at themullerfamily dot net or Lori Chapman at raccoon2 at comcast dot net.

International Night

International Night 2013
Friday, March 22, 2013
Christ Chapel, 1200 Old Stage Rd., Centerville, MA
5:00 set up, 6:00 dinner, 7-9 virtual tour of the world

The intention of this list is to give some ideas to those who are participating in the international event in March.  Please do not feel compelled to do more than you were already planning.  The only requirement for International Night is that your family bring in an international dish of food to share at the pot-luck dinner.   Any table displays or costumes that you come up with will just add to the learning and the fun!
Some Ideas for International Night 3/22/13:

If you want, make your own passports to record the countries that are represented.
Here are some sites to help with this:
* *  for Templates see this site and scroll down to the reproducibles list of links: http://mconn.doe.state.la.us/lessonplans.php?task=LP_view&lesson_id=2542&dispPage=14
Note: Each participating family should have an ink stamp or sticker from their country available for those who wish to have their "passports" stamped. Any kind will do.

Have some fun hand-outs on your country's table such as coloring sheets, fact pages, bookmarks, homemade post cards, candy, or snack sample.  www.education.com

If you have an ipod or walkman, make a recording of the language or music at your table for listening through headphones.  Note:  a mix of multicultural music will be played overhead during the evening.

Make a "match- it", "true or false" or other quiz game out of facts about your country.  If you have a Geo-Safari, you could make your own game cards.

Send out a "Flat Stanley" to another country and share his experiences.  See this site for details:

Research famous artists from your country and display some artwork.

Show something that originated or was invented in your country.

Make a model of a traditional house or a famous building or monument from the country.

Include the national flag, symbol, food, animal, plant, anthem, creed, government, religions, past times, famous landmarks, etc. in the display.

Have your students create graphs & charts to show statistical facts.  Make this the math lesson for a day!

Bring in, or list the books you used to learn about the country.  Assign book reports or biographies about famous citizens.

Design a travel poster

Have a few "Ask Me" questions about your country printed out with a "take one" sign so that your kids can give the answers they have learned.

Wear a costume from your country, or another country if you can.  This really adds to the festivities!

Report on, write to, and pray for missionaries that are serving in your chosen country.

If you haven't already, consider sponsoring a Compassion Child from your chosen country.  For only $38 dollars a month, you can help fight child poverty & hunger, bring the Gospel message to a child and correspond with him or her through letters (either paper or email via their site).  Take a moment to see their website: www.compassioninternational.org

GROUP GAMES If anyone would like to organize and lead the group in a short international game of some sort, we can use the gymnasium for that, but parents would have to accompany participating children and help the leader.  Let me know if you want to lead this activity, and which game(s) you are planning.

GROUP CRAFTS If anyone would like to organize and provide supplies for a table where the children can make an international craft, let me know.

Note: The number of tables available at Christ Chapel is down because many of them have been broken.  I think there will be enough, but in case I find out otherwise when we set up on Wednesday 3/20, I may need some of you to bring a folding table if you have one.   I'll let you know.

Annual Testing coming soon!

We are going to have our SAT testing the last week of May (will give you dates A.S.A.P.) and we will hold them at the Presbyterian Church on Route 132 in West Barnstable.
The fee will be $25.00 per family. (in addition to paying for the tests) This covers the cost of return postage, a donation to the church for use of their building and a stipend to the test administrators to help cover the cost of their traveling expenses. You order from BJUP and the results are available online within a few days.  Please do not order until you get the go ahead from the group.

2012-2013 Shakespeare Class

Our curtain call from our final production last year, Much Ado About Nothing

2012-2013 Shakespeare Class
Shakespeare Class is a full year elective, designed to give students exposure to  one of the world’s greatest creative literary geniuses. A major goal of the course is to familiarize students with Shakespearean drama, appreciate, understand, and fall in love with Shakespeare’s art.   It is an interactive course full of good times and adventure as we explore some of the greatest literary works of all time.

Class will run on Fridays from  2pm - 4pm at Forestdale Baptist Church beginning with Term I on September 14th, 2012.
No class will be held on November 23rd, December 21st, 28th or January 4th.

The class is open to all, 6th grade through high school.  Everyone must be willing to participate fully in the class both in reading, discussion and acting.

Class fee for participation is $25 per family, per term.  If you have more than one teen participating, however, please add another $5 per participant for book fees.  The sooner you can get that to me the better so that I can order our books.

I believe I am settled on the plays we will be studying, however, I am not quiet certain what play/plays we will be doing a production from.
We will be studying some of Shakespeare’s histories this year, Richard the II, Henry the IV and Henry the V as well as As You Like It and The Tempest.  We managed to get through 4 last year, I am confident we can get through studying 5 this year.

There will be a few more film versions in store as well, including some of the BBC Shakespeare Unlocked analyses of the plays.
Richard the II
Henry the IV
Henry the V
The Tempest 2010 with Helen Mirrin
As You Like It
We will be needing 2 hour blocks of time for each of these separate from the class.  We will be viewing them at my home in East Falmouth, really not that far folks, or in Marstons Mills or both depending on what can be worked out.

Feel free to call or email with any questions miklizro at gmail dot com

Lori will still organize the Stanford Testing in April 2013. (Dates will be Barnstable Spring Break)  All are welcome.  There will be a $25 testing fee per family.

Does your teen like Shakespeare?

MaryEllen Oliver's Shakespeare class has been a huge hit this year.
We are going to finish out with the study and production of......
 Much Ado About Nothing.
She would love to have some more people join us for this last portion of the class.  All kids age 13 and up are welcome!  Show up at the next class or email MaryEllen for more details.  planetcatbooks at yahoo dot com
Classes are 1-3 on Wednesdays at Forestdale Baptist Church.  The class is $25 per student with a $50 cap per family.
This time, we will be doing the entire play, so students will each have their own book to keep, instead of using a printed-on-paper script. Each student will need to bring said book back and forth from home (to learn lines) to each class (to rehearse). We will be adding some extra rehearsals as the production nears.
The performance looks like it will take place during the week of May 26 to June 2, will firm up soon.
NO class the week of April vacation.

Book Sale

My friends, I have been homeschooling 10 years and have accumulated a ton of curricula and resources for K-high school and it is time, time,  time for me to clear the shelves.

On Saturday, March 10th, I will be having a sale.

From 10am to 3:00 at my home.
120 Fresh Pond Road, East Falmouth, Ma

For the sake of ease, I am making a (huge) free table, a $1 table, a $5 table a $10 table and a $20 table.
There will be a ton of stuff on each.
I am doing it this way because to price each piece and cart it about and back disheartens me no end.

Please note, the free table will have a great many of things donated by other homeschoolers at the end of the PACE curriculum sales to bless other homeschooler with.  That was their intended purpose and will be there as such.

Feel free to let me know if there is something you are looking for specifically and I can put it aside for you if I have it and it is one of the items going.

Blessings,
Lizzie
